Welcome

That the Chamber is still in business – and with new younger members and more active than ever – is clearly a sign of its Success and Progress.

It is a tremendous privilege for me to lead the Chinese Chamber of Commerce as it celebrates a remarkable turning point in its history. The CCC has travelled a long way through the different chapters in Mauritius history. We have participated in our country’s economic growth, and beyond that, experienced all the trials and tribulations that were part and parcel of our development as a nation.

The Chamber’s stature today is a tribute to our many predecessors for their selfless and impressive hard work and perseverance. We are a Chamber representing the aspirations and vision of an enterprising and adaptive community, backed by its collective wisdom and ideals.

The Chinese Chamber of Commerce has the distinction of being one of the oldest private organisations in Mauritius. It was established on 8th December 1908 as a self help group of traders to protect and promote their business interest, assist new Chinese immigrants, and improve the welfare of the Chinese Community. It is the second oldest overseas Chinese Chamber of Commerce.

The role of the CCC has evolved in response to our changing political, economic, and social environment. Over the last 30 years, the Chinese business genius has re- invented itself. The old familiar scene of a Chinese shop in the Mauritian towns and villages (“la boutique sinois”) has gradually disappeared as the older generations departed from this world.

We now have a younger generation of new entrepreneurs in the business of garment manufacturing and export, restaurant operators, motor vehicle dealers, travel and tourism agencies, supermarkets, food manufacturing, food imports and packaging, printers and advertising firms, distributors of household electrical appliances and of hardware and sanitary products, real estate developers and contractors in the building construction industry.

Our members now contribute actively in the economic, social and cultural development of the Mauritian society in a transformed capacity in the business world, but continue to serve the country with the same tradition of speedy service, quality, value for money, trust, and humility.

Today, the CCC works closely and effectively with the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and is thus able to benefit from the latter’s well organised information and documentation service and its highly qualified trade specialists and economists for representations with the Authorities. However on certain occasions, the Chamber can and has intervened directly with the Authorities on behalf of its members. Moreover, the Chamber has retained its own business networking system, maintained its direct privileged diaspora trade relations with China and overseas Chinese Chamber of Commerce and fosters friendship amongst its members, encouraging their participation in the preservation of Chinese Culture and Traditional Values through the organisation of activities such as its Annual China Town Food and Cultural Festival in collaboration with other Chinese Socio-Cultural Organisations.

Our centennial celebrations represent an important milestone in the history of our Chamber. Even as we reflect on our past, we look forward to our common aspirations and a promising future ahead. Various changes in the global economic order and the continuous restructuring of the economy of the Region have presented unprecedented business opportunities and untold challenges. As we are thrust headlong into a new economic era,we have resolved to channel all our energies, in unison, to uncover business leads, champion business interests and lead local enterprises to globalise and promote the Mauritius brand in the overseas market.

Moving along such strategic directions, the Chamber has already embarked on many relevant projects among which, organising numerous networking activities, recruiting more younger entrepreneurs to serve in the Chamber, and ensuring that our Chamber continues to keep up with the times.

I am confident that the same indomitable and pioneering spirit that has sustained the CCC over the last 100 years will see it through another 100 years.
